Medical Media In 1991, we designed a modern technical 2,500 SF photographic and electronic media laboratory into a existing low ceiling basement space at the Nursing Home Care unit.
Corridor & Ward Renovations (2 projects)
In 1992 and 1993, we designed renovations of corridors and wards on the ground and fourth floors. The first project refurbished 13,000 sf of psychiatric care wards with new corridor finishes and lighting, corridor handrails, exterior windows, restroom/shower room tile and fixtures, doors and hardware, floor coverings, some new ceilings, and wall murals and paint throughout at a cost of $650,000. A second $665,000 project refurbished 13,000 SF of ground floor administrative areas. A new canteen was designed with modular seating, attractive cabinetry, modular carpet flooring, ceilings, and a pleasant coordinated color scheme throughout.

Clinical Labs Renovation The clinical labs maintain the constant baseline for health indicators at the VA Medical Center. Barada-Fuetsch expressed this concept by arranging the specialized lab spaces as alcoves along an open corridor accented by dramatic linear lighting fixtures. The project renovated 9,000 sf of specialized clinical labs including hemototogy, microbiology, urinalysis, serology, immunology, chemistry/special chemistry, pathology and morgue. An additional 3,000 sf were new administrative offices and 4,400 sf of new Research Labs were added to expand the research facilities. Preliminary Design services included initial meetings with each lab department to evaluate operations and establish space needs in conjunction with the VA Laboratory space standards (H-08-9). Alternate layouts were presented along with concepts for swing space and phasing to insure operations during renovation.
The final design includes asbestos removal and complete new systems for 12,000 sf of renovated areas. The morgue was expanded, microbiology isolated, accessioning centralized, the labs centralized, and staff areas grouped in a single wing. Each lab area follows a traditional lab module, but casework and general piping for gases and power have been greatly reduced in favor of new auto-analyser equipment. The project is coordinated with concurrent projects for new fire alarms, sprinklers, and a $45 million general expansion. Barada-Fuetsch provided a detailed cost estimate and assisted the VA in negotiating a construction contract with an 8a minority general contractor.
