Eureka, Nevada
This $2.5 million rehabilitation and improvement project restored this 1890's building to its original splendor as an opera house. This project received an Honor Award from the National Trust for
Historic Preservation in 1994. The original structure has two 4,400 SF floors which house a 250 seat theater with a second floor horse shoe shaped balcony. Seismic strengthening, HVAC and new electrical systems were added along with contemporary restrooms, an elevator and a commercial
kitchen.
All improvements comply with the standards for improvement of historic buildings. The exterior, entry lobby and main hall were restored. A basement was added to house mechanical equipment and storage spaces. The first floor which had housed everything from a grocery to a pool hall was gutted. A commercial kitchen and convention meeting rooms was built in this area and connected to the other floors by a new elevator. Design services also included an acoustical analysis and preliminary design for theater lighting, sound systems and stage rigging to be added later. The restored opera house has become the center of Eureka's tourist industry, serving as a museum, convention center able to serve 300 meals and an assemble hall for summer stock and community performances.
