Native American Facilities

Since 1984, Barada Fuetsch Architects has provided architectural services for Native American facilities, including four intended for the maintenance of the body and another for the development of the mind. In general, our planning and design of any facility attempts to create an environment in which owners take pride and users will enjoy being. In designing buildings and spaces for a Native American community, we have attempted to create an environment which is not only well planned and state-of-the-art technologically but which also, whenever possible, incorporates images from and references to the history and culture of that particular tribe.

Barada Fuetsch Architects was recognized with the Washoe County Design Award for our design of the Pyramid Lake Junior/Senior High School.

PYRAMID LAKE PAIUTE TRIBE HIGH SCHOOL
Nixon, Nevada
This 43,000 s.f Jr/Sr high school, completed in 2000, was designed to respect and honor both the traditions and culture of the Pyramid Lake Tribe and the geography where they live. The design incorporates a 40 foot pyramidal skylight over the main gathering space which divides the academic wing from the sports and industrial arts wing. The pyramid skylight covers the commons area and is the heart of the building. It is intended to invoke an image of the essence of Pyramid Lake. The building axis through the main entry, pyramid skylight, and amphitheater aligns with the pyramid rock and the "Earth Mother" in Pyramid Lake. The emphasis of the overall design is to assist the students and the Pyramid Lake Tribe in the quest to be reminded of who they are and where they live. The hope is that the school will provide an environment which will encourage stories about the history of the Tribe and this beautiful Pyramid Lake natural setting. The circular access road around the school is to symbolize the circle of unity. The cardinal points of the compass (north, east, southand west) are reflected by markers in the amphitheater. The sacred direction of East is marked within the traffic circle at the main building entry with a place for the east direction marker.
WASHOE TRIBE HEALTH CLINIC
Dresslerville, Nevada

The interior includes medical services wing, dental services, eye care services, and public health and counseling. The building is designed to be easily expanded for future radiology and other services.

The building receives its clients from the south east toward which it opens its waiting room with protected glasss. The dome structure over the entry and waiting area is meant to symbolize a basket. The masonry near the entry and the roof of the dome structure at the building’s center incorporate patterns that are meant to represent the Tribe’s basketry history.
